This year’s offseason has been an intriguing one for the Los Angeles Lakers. After distinctly moving on from the LeBron James era, the Lakers have embraced a new identity with Luka Doncic as the face of the franchise. However, this has come with its own set of challenges.
Much of this offseason has been dictated by the need to adapt to Doncic’s playing style. To that point, the superstar has been clear about the profile of players he would like to be paired with, too. In response, the Purple and Gold have put together an intriguing roster, much of which aligns with his demands.
When noting the quality of signings the Lakers have made this summer, Luka Doncic seemed quite pleased with the moves during an interview with Golf Channel’s Rich Lerner, as he stated:
“I think we have a really good team. I’m very excited to start the next season. Obviously, last season didn’t end how we wanted, so we’re excited for the new season.”
Although Luka Doncic approached the topic in a relatively casual setting, there was much to take away from it. As the Purple and Gold also commit to Doncic’s timeline, it will be intriguing to see how the franchise changes direction.
Can Luka Doncic Lead The Lakers To A Winning Season?
For the Lakers, seeing LeBron James leave this summer is significant, as it marks the departure of one of the longest-tenured superstars in recent years. While disheartening, this effectively sets the tone for the new era with Luka Doncic as the face of the franchise.
Last season, the Purple and Gold ended the campaign with a 53-29 record, finishing fourth in the Western Conference despite considerable challenges. Although they faced some difficult situations entering the postseason, the Lakers persisted, moving past the Houston Rockets in the first round before inevitably losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the second.
Although it was impressive for the Lakers to even make it past the first round, it is worth noting how impactful LeBron James was while securing those wins. Since players like Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves were injured, at least for the majority of the first round, James had to take over. In that regard, his departure leaves a significant gap for the team to overcome.
Realistically, it is impossible to compensate for James’ presence. Given what he brings to the table as a player, there is virtually no asset that can contribute as much as the veteran superstar. Still, it can be argued that a player like Luka Doncic can lead the Lakers to a competitive campaign.
Barring his individual averages of 33.5 points (league-high), 7.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists per game, Doncic remains one of the best players in the league. When noting what he could accomplish with the Dallas Mavericks in 2024, it is evident that he is capable of achieving great things when surrounded by the right talent.
Hence, the Lakers’ moves are quite noteworthy. Having supported the superstar with the ideal profile of players to help him thrive, it will be intriguing to see whether he can lead the Lakers’ title push in the 2026-27 season.
