Training camp will kick off tomorrow for the Buffalo Bills, as the rookies will be the first ones to suit up, and then the rest of the team will be there later on. It's the start of the new era under Joe Brady, who will take on the pressure of the expectations that come with this job.
The Bills are one of the league’s best teams and have been this entire decade, and with Josh Allen still playing at an elite level, they won’t be going anywhere. However, this is Allen’s first season with a new head coach. While he and Brady have worked together since 2022, Brady will have a lot more responsibility on his plate.
As for the defense, Jim Leonhard brings a lot of hope with this new defensive scheme that is coming. For nearly a decade, the defense was operating in a 4-2-5 defense that was solid, but also a huge liability in crucial moments especially in the playoffs. Now with the defense with going to a 3-4, fans are hoping that the scheme change is an upgrade.
Even through all of the changes that the Bills made, there are high expectations and hope that Buffalo can take the next step forward that they never did under Sean McDermott. At the same time, we also have to consider all of the possibilities of the nightmare scenarios that could flip Buffalo’s dreams upside down in 2026.
5 nightmare scenarios for the Bills in 2026
5.) Second consecutive rookie class doesn’t produce for Bills
Last year’s rookie class was more disappointing than successful for various reasons. The only two rookies that stood out were DL Deone Walker and TE Jackson Hawes.
Maxwell Hairston missed the first six games due to an injury in training camp. T.J. Sanders wasn’t able to adapt quickly to the game and he never made a true impact. Landon Jackson saw extremely limited action before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Overall, Buffalo’s draft class did not help the team overall as much as fans hoped for.
With this new draft class coming in that is led by T.J. Parker, the Bills should be hoping that the young guys can show promise sooner than later.
4.) Bills start off regular season 0-2
Buffalo’s first two games are brutal. They are on the road in Week 1 against the Houston Texans, a team that has had their number when they face off against each other in Houston. Not to mention, the Texans completely obliterated the Bills’ offensive line in last year’s matchup. Their defense got stronger with the addition of Kayden McDonald and the duo of Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter is as good as they come. Starting out 0-1 would be a rough start.
Then just four days later, the Bills will be debuting their new stadium on Thursday Night Football against the Detroit Lions, who are no joke as far as talent is concerned. So, starting off 0-2 would not only set the Bills back a bit, but it would be against an AFC team who would hold the tiebreaker, and then against an NFC powerhouse.
3.) DJ Moore doesn’t produce the way fans hoped for
Outside of the Bills moving on from Sean McDermott and promoting Joe Brady to head coach, the biggest move the Bills made to their roster was trading for DJ Moore from the Chicago Bears. With him now being the clear-cut No. 1 receiver in Buffalo, fans are hoping that he and Josh Allen can become the next big duo in the league.
However, there is always the possibility that Moore doesn’t deliver for a variety of reasons. If that does indeed happen, it could very well the offense back and it could look like the same offense from a passing perspective like it has the last two seasons.
2.) Bills’ defense lets Josh Allen down again in postseason
This has been the biggest story for the Bills in the Josh Allen era. The playoffs come and while Allen delivers big time, it’s been Buffalo’s defense that has been the reason why the Bills face an early exit. Since the 2020/2021 season, the defense has given up no less than 27 points in each of their playoff loss.
If the Bills make the playoffs, and once again fall short because of the defense falling apart, Bills fans are going to be living through that nightmare once again.
1.) Joe Brady fails miserably in first year as HC
With the head coaching change from McDermott to Brady, there will be little to no room for anything less than what McDermott did in his tenure. While Brady has been in the building since 2022, he is inheriting a lot more responsibility which can be overwhelming.
Even though Brady was successful as an offensive coordinator, there is always the nightmare scenario that Brady completely fails in his first year. If that is the case, the conversation about moving on from McDermott to Brady is going to be a heavy topic amongst Bills Mafia.
