The 2026 World Cup is now over after Spain's extra-time victory over Argentina in New Jersey on Sunday.
The extended 2025/26 season is now officially over. And that, of course, means one thing: the attention will now turn back to club football, with the Premier League returning in little over a month's time.
Before the English top-flight season gets underway for the 2026/27 campaign, clubs from all around the country will be focusing on strengthening their squad. Chelsea are no different and the next few weeks are expected to be very busy for the west Londoners, now led by the impressive Xabi Alonso.

Thus far, the Blues have only officially confirmed one signing (bar those arriving on pre-agreed deals) - Marco Palestra for £47million. There has, however, been work going on behind the scenes to add to that number (see below).
Elsewhere, £126m has been made from three sales - with Marc Cucurella (£52m to Real Madrid), Tyrique George (£24m to Everton) and Andrey Santos (£50m to Manchester United) all going through this summer. At the start of a brand-new week, football.london takes a look at the business that Chelsea would love to get done in the next few days:
Rogers deal gets over the line
While all eyes were on Sunday evening's World Cup final between Spain and Argentina, Chelsea supporters got their fix of transfer mayhem little over 24 hours prior. The big story - on the transfer front - over the weekend came on Saturday when Chelsea shocked the footballing world by agreeing a £117m deal with Aston Villa for Morgan Rogers.
Rogers agreed personal terms with the Blues, after Alonso spoke to the England international to help sway his decision with Arsenal also interested. Chelsea are set to add the versatile attacker - that we have all heard about all summer-long - to Alonso's squad in time for the new season as long as there are no last-minute hiccups.
The 23-year-old former Manchester City academy star is in London today (Monday) to complete a medical before signing a long-term contract at Chelsea.
Lacroix and Chavarria progress
While the Rogers deal was done quickly, in the grand scheme of things, negotiations for Maxence Lacroix and Pep Chavarria have proved to be more complex and ultimately frustrating from Chelsea's perspective. football.london is told both players remain of interest to the west Londoners, though neither is advanced at the time of writing.
Chelsea have spoken directly to Crystal Palace re Lacroix, sources say, though no agreement has been reached over a fee for the France international. Lacroix is said to be open to the possibility of moving to Stamford Bridge.
As for Chavarria, it is a similar situation. The Spaniard is keen on the switch, but Chelsea have been unable - thus far - to strike an agreement with Rayo Vallecano. Sources said last week that Chelsea are under the impression that Rayo moved the goalposts, so to speak, when it came to the left back's valuation.
Initially, Chelsea were told €15m (£12.8m) would be enough to land Chavarria this summer, however there has been a change in stance from Rayo. The Spanish club are now demanding €25m (£21.3m) for their left back as club-to-club talks continue - and there are even some reports claiming Rayo have upped that price.
Garnacho and Chalobah talks continue
Chelsea are open to selling Alejandro Garnacho this summer but will not facilitate a loan move for the Argentine - as exclusively revealed on football.london earlier this month. AS Roma are the current front-runners to land the out-of-favour winger, with the Blues demanding £42.5m for his services.
Alonso all but confirmed Garnacho will be moving on this summer in last week's press conference. Roma are in continuous talks with Chelsea over a deal, with the Italian club said to prefer a loan move while the Blues continue to insist on a permanent solution.
Meanwhile, Trevoh Chalobah could also be on his way to Italy. Como have seen two offers turned down for the Cobham graduate, while there are two other clubs also in the mix for the 27-year-old's signature.
Chelsea, sources insist, are open to offloading Chalobah before September's transfer deadline. The Blues have placed a price tag in the region of £30m-35m for the England international. If Chelsea were able to get their asking price for both Garnacho and Chalobah, the Blues would secure over £77m in total.
