Why Kaide Gordon has not been involved in Liverpool pre-season so far

Kaide Gordon is set to miss any opportunity to impress Andoni Iraola ahead of a likely move from Liverpool this summer, with the winger not fit for pre-season.

Now 21 and having seen his development stalled by fitness issues, Gordon is at a decisive point in his young career this summer.

With a year left on his contract the forward is now expected to depart Liverpool, with little chance to catch the eye of new head coach Iraola.

That comes with Gordon yet to reach full fitness after undergoing surgery on a torn meniscus in December, ruling him out for the past seven months.

He has recently returned to light training and was part of the U21s squad to begin pre-season at the AXA Training Centre earlier this month.

But Gordon is still following his rehab programme which will restrict any involvement in warmup friendlies as he instead considers any options for a summer transfer.

Given the number of players sidelined through injury and yet to return following the World Cup, the versatile attacker could have been one of those called up by Iraola for this month’s United States tour.

Instead he will remain on Merseyside and is not likely to get an opportunity in front of Arne Slot‘s replacement as the likes of Josh Abe, Will Wright and Josh Sonni-Lambie are prioritised.

If he does depart Anfield this summer as anticipated it will be a sad end to five years with Liverpool for Gordon, who joined from Derby for a package worth up to £3 million in 2021.

The likelihood is that the fee involved is closer to £1 million, with few of the bonuses negotiated having been met, though a further £500,000 was paid in 2022 to remove a 20 percent sell-on clause in the deal.

Gordon made four appearances for Liverpool’s first team in 2021/22 as part of an eye-catching breakthrough, including becoming the club’s second-youngest ever goalscorer at the time when he netted against Shrewsbury in the FA Cup aged 17.

But he has only played four more times in the four seasons since – once off the bench as part of a heavily rotated side against Crystal Palace in last season’s Carabao Cup.

Loan spells with Norwich and Portsmouth offered little in terms of exposure and Gordon may be required to look further down the English football pyramid as he seeks a new club.

Left-back Owen Beck is another player who has not been able to report back for pre-season fit and ready, with the 23-year-old still sidelined after hamstring surgery.
