Pau Cubarsi has strengthened his case for the Ballon d’Or after completing a remarkable World Cup with Spain at just 19 years old. The FC Barcelona centre-back was named the tournament’s Best Young Player after establishing himself as the leader of an almost unbeatable defence.

Spain conceded just once during the entire tournament, with Cubarsi forming an excellent partnership alongside Aymeric Laporte. For Barcelona supporters, the most impressive part is how quickly this level of responsibility has become normal for a player who is still only 19.

Different eras and playing styles make direct comparisons difficult, but simply being placed alongside a defender who won football’s biggest individual award shows the level Cubarsi has reached.
His case also extends beyond the World Cup. Cubarsi played a major role in Barcelona’s LaLiga success, meaning he now combines a major club trophy with an extraordinary international tournament.
Winning the Ballon d’Or as a defender remains incredibly difficult, especially at 19. However, Cubarsi’s rise deserves to be taken seriously. He is no longer simply one of La Masia’s most exciting graduates. He is already performing like one of the world’s elite centre-backs.
Whether the award comes this year or not, Barcelona may have something even more valuable: a defensive leader capable of defining the club’s back line for the next decade.
