Chelsea have been urged to make a surprise move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford after former Blues midfielder Andy Townsend backed the England international as an ideal addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad.
Rashford’s future at Old Trafford remains one of the biggest talking points of the summer transfer window following the end of his loan spell at Barcelona. Although the Spanish champions were impressed by the 28-year-old’s performances, they opted against activating their option to sign him permanently after strengthening elsewhere, leaving the England international facing an uncertain future.
CHELSEA have been tentatively linked with Rashford in recent weeks as speculation continues over where the forward could play next season. Reports suggest Manchester United are open to offers for the academy graduate, although any move to a Premier League rival would be a complicated one.
Now Townsend believes Chelsea should seriously consider making their move: ‘I think Marcus Rashford improves Chelsea’s squad, he is an improvement on Alejandro Garnacho, that’s for sure,’ Andy Townsend told CasinoHawks.
‘The number we were talking about was £35m. I’m very surprised that no one has come to get him for that money, even if he’s 28.
‘Wide strikers are asked to produce a lot of output nowadays, and there aren’t many operating in the top flight at thirty-two or thirty-three. So these next couple of years for Marcus are big. It has to be the right move.
‘He’s on massive wages, which is an issue for any club, but you’d think he could get that to a level everyone finds acceptable. A club like Chelsea might suit him.
‘I could see that. I like Pedro Neto, but he sometimes flatters to deceive. Garnacho is far too inconsistent, like Jadon Sancho, those sorts of players are difficult to accommodate.
Would Rashford Be A Good Signing?
The biggest question mark would be consistency. Rashford has shown periods of outstanding form, but he has also struggled to maintain those standards over a full season. Chelsea’s project under Xabi Alonso would require every player to contribute with intensity, pressing and a strong mentality, meaning the forward would need to rediscover his best form.
Tactically, Rashford could offer CHELSEA valuable versatility. He can play from the left, operate centrally and provide the kind of direct running that can stretch opposition defences. With creative players around him, he could benefit from a system designed to maximise his strengths.
Ultimately, Rashford would represent a calculated gamble rather than a guaranteed solution. If Chelsea can help him regain his confidence and consistency, he could become a major asset.
However, the club would need to ensure the fee and wages reflect his recent performances rather than only his past achievements
