Tottenham’s young defender Elijah Upson is heading to a new club. Arsenal have moved fast to seal the deal, as per the latest transfer news coming out of the Emirates. The teenager turned down a new contract at Spurs to begin a new chapter elsewhere.
Elijah Upson Completes Move Across North London
As reported by GIVEMESPORT, Elijah Upson has signed a long-term deal with the Gunners. The transfer will not cost a fee, since his contract at Spurs has already run out. Fabrizio Romano says he signed the deal on Friday, and a full announcement should follow soon.
This move ends eleven years at Tottenham’s academy, as he joined the club at just seven years old. He also helped Spurs win an Under-17 cup last season, which shows the level of talent Tottenham are now losing. He has also played for England at Under-18 level, so this exit is a big loss for Spurs.
As reported by GOAL, the defender also turned down offers from Chelsea, Manchester City, Everton, and clubs in Germany and France. Interest of that scale shows how highly he is rated in football today, and it proves top clubs across Europe were watching him closely for months.
Why Elijah Upson Chose to Leave Spurs
Competition at the back played a key role. Marcos Senesi arrived at Tottenham this summer, and Jan Paul van Hecke followed soon after. The centre-back spot was already crowded before that, with Micky van de Ven and Kevin Danso both ahead of him in the pecking order.
Captain Cristian Romero may also leave, with interest coming from clubs in the Premier League and beyond. On top of that, the new manager wants experienced faces in defence rather than giving academy prospects time to develop. There is less patience for young players to wait their turn.
So, a clear path to first-team games looked hard to find. In the end, he chose growth over staying loyal to the club that raised him.

Competition Matches Goals Assists
Premier League 2 2 0 0
UEFA Youth League 6 1 0
U18 Premier League 14 0 1
U18 Premier League Cup 2 1 0
As reported by the Daily Cannon, he is also the son of former England defender Matthew Upson. His father spent six years at the same club and even played at a World Cup for England. It may have influenced Elijah Upson’s decision to join this side.
Arsenal Keeps Building for the Future
This move is part of a wider strategy. Arsenal have built one of the best academies in English football. Names like Ethan Nwaneri and Max Dowman have already forced their way into the senior squad, following a path that Bukayo Saka and Myles Lewis-Skelly walked before them. Arsenal’s own academy, Hale End, keeps producing talent that actually gets a chance. The young defender now joins that same path with plenty of promise.
The north London club have also stayed busy elsewhere this summer. As reported by Yahoo Sports, goalkeeper Illan Meslier has already joined, along with a deal for Christos Tzolis. Leandro Trossard left for Besiktas after the club won the Premier League title. Talks are also ongoing for Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, so this signing forms part of a broader summer rebuild.
For Tottenham, though, this stings more than a normal academy exit. Losing a player of this level to a close rival reflects poorly on Tottenham’s recruitment planning. Overall, Elijah Upson looks like a smart signing, one that could pay off for years to come.
