July 20 – Chelsea have smashed their transfer record after agreeing a £117 million deal to sign England midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, with the 23-year-old completing his medical in London this morning ahead of a move to Stamford Bridge.
Rogers will sign a six-year contract, with the option of a further 12 months, becoming the latest marquee addition to Xabi Alonso’s squad ahead of the new Premier League campaign.
Rogers’ fee sets a new benchmark for an English player, edging past the £116 million Manchester City agreed to pay Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson just two weeks ago. It also eclipses the £107 million Chelsea spent on Enzo Fernández in 2023, making Rogers the most expensive signing in the club’s history.
Only Liverpool’s £125 million acquisition of Alexander Isak ranks higher among Premier League transfers, with Rogers now moving ahead of Florian Wirtz, whose switch cost £100 million plus a potential £16 million in add-ons.
Villa have landed a remarkable return on a player they signed from Middlesbrough in 2024. Rogers arrived for an initial £8 million, with the deal potentially rising to £15 million, before developing into one of the Premier League’s most sought-after midfielders under Unai Emery.
Middlesbrough will benefit from a 20% sell-on clause negotiated as part of Rogers’ move to Villa, meaning the Championship club will bank at least £20.4 million.
Boro, who narrowly missed out on promotion after their controversial play-off final appearance bore no fruit, believe it is the biggest sell-on payment ever received by an English club.
Rogers leaves Villa after scoring 21 league goals in 85 appearances and helping the club lift last season’s UEFA Europa League title.
Internationally, Rogers has been important for Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, earning 22 senior caps and scoring once. He featured in all of England’s matches at this summer’s FIFA World Cup, although only started twice – against Panama in the group stage and in the third-place play-off victory over France.
His departure is the second significant midfield exit from Villa Park this week after Youri Tielemans completed a £35 million move to Manchester United.
Adding to Villa’s diminishing squad numbers is Amadou Onana’s ACL injury, which will effectively rule him out until at least the start of 2027.
In response, Villa have moved quickly to reshape their squad, bringing in Switzerland international Johan Manzambi from Freiburg for around £50 million, while João Gomes has arrived this morning from Wolves in a £38 million deal.
