Our writer Simon Phillips has some really interesting information on the deal to sign Morgan Rogers which Chelsea have just pulled off.

The attacker is taking his medical today, and will then complete a £117m move from Aston Villa. As recently as just a few days ago, it didn’t seem like the Blues were in the race. So what happened? Phillips has the full story.

Apparently Chelsea were close to Rogers a year ago, and even before that, Xabi Alonso wanted him at Bayer Leverkusen in January 2024. Phillips’ sources claim “Alonso really did help us in convincing Rogers to join.”

Arsenal were “dithering” and Chelsea stepped in to seal the deal and leave the Gunners “stunned.”

Ultimately, while you might worry about the price, what’s clear is that Chelsea were willing to pay it because Rogers is our “number one target for attack,” and was wanted by the manager and the sporting directors.

In other news…

The signing of Rogers is going to be a big mistake says Paul Merson, who can’t see where he fits into the Chelsea team.

On the other hand, Joe Cole is one person who is very happy about the Rogers deal, pointing to a few reasons why he thinks it will be a big hit.
