Malik Nabers tracking a pass for the Giants
The Giants can survive a lot of camp weirdness. Malik Nabers missing time is not one of them.
The first open practice is scheduled for July 30 at Greenbrier. Nabers, Darius Slayton, and Cam Skattebo are all working back from injuries, but Nabers is the one who changes everything about the offense when he is on the field.
The Giants need him for more than the catches. He pulls coverage, gives the quarterback a real answer on third down, and creates room for every other skill player.

The Giants need Nabers before the offense can settle
There is no substitute for the attention Nabers gets from a defense. A backup can run the same route, but he may not pull the safety, win the contested ball, or turn a short throw into a 40-yard gain.
It matters for Jaxson Dart. A young quarterback needs an outlet when the first read is covered, and Nabers can turn a bad-looking snap into a positive play. It is a pretty nice thing to have while the rest of the offense is still learning a new system.
The recovery timeline matters more than camp hype
The Giants should be careful here. Nabers has already shown he can play at a high level, so a few limited practices do not need to become a panic story. Pretending every missed day is harmless would be just as silly.
The checkpoints are simple: Can he cut without hesitation? Can he finish a full practice? Can he string several days together and recover well? I care a lot more about those answers than one highlight during the first week of camp.
Jaxson Dart cannot replace what Nabers does
Dart had 24 total touchdowns as a rookie, which gives the Giants a real reason to be encouraged. His numbers also belong to a young quarterback who still needs the game to stay manageable around him.
If Nabers is ready, Dart gets the best version of his supporting cast. If Nabers is not ready, the quarterback has to spread the ball around and create more answers on his own. The issue is much bigger than any preseason throw.
