Seattle Seahawks rookies reported to training camp on July 17 at the Virginia Mason Athletic Center in Renton, Washington, while veterans are scheduled to report on the 24th, with the first practice set for the 25th. One rookie to monitor throughout the summer is defensive tackle and seventh-round pick Deven Eastern. The 320-pound Eastern played college football at Minnesota and was primarily known as a run-stopper, recording 53 stops and 12 tackles for loss rather than as a pass-rusher, totaling 42 pressures and 4.5 sacks in four seasons. He will be competing for a roster spot and a place in the defensive line rotation.
Unfortunately, he has been dealing with a lingering injury.

According to Adam Schefter on Saturday, the Seahawks placed Deven Eastern on the active/PUP list, where he will still count toward the 90-man roster. He has been dealing with an undisclosed injury that sidelined him for most of the spring. Eastern can return to practice at any time and can be activated from the PUP list once he passes a physical. If he remains on the PUP list during roster cuts, Seattle can revert him to the reserve/PUP list, causing him to miss at least the first four games of the season.

How does this impact Eastern’s chances of making the 53-man roster?
Any prolonged absence will hurt Deven Eastern’s chances of making the 53-man roster, as rookies need all the reps they can get. It is difficult to properly evaluate a player without pads, and once the pads come on, we will have a much better idea of how they look. Eastern potentially missing padded practices, joint practices, and preseason games would be costly.
Additionally, Seattle will likely keep anywhere from five to six defensive tackles on the roster, with Byron Murphy II, Leonard Williams, Jarran Reed, and Rylie Mills essentially locks. This leaves Eastern in competition against Brandon Pili, Mike Morris, J.R. Singleton, Bubba Thomas, and Uso Seumalo for the final spot/s.
