On Friday, the Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterbacks and rookies, along with players rehabilitating pre-existing injuries, will report to Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri, ahead of the rest of the team.
That includes starting quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was only held out of 11-on-11 team periods during OTA and mini-camp practices. There has been no word on the possibility of Mahomes starting training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.
On Monday, Albert Breer, Sports Illustrated’s senior NFL reporter, shared insight on the biggest storylines heading into training camp with Mahomes’ potential participation listed No. 2 in his rundown.
Breer shared the common narrative regarding Mahomes’ maddening desire to be on the field for team drills sooner rather than later, then he pointed out the Chiefs’ return to staggered report dates this camp. This should give Mahomes a few days to practice on the field and go through drills with a partial roster of rookies before he’s tempted to push to full speed when full practices start on the 29th.
Breer followed that note with insight from people in the building in Kansas City:
There’s an expectation among Chiefs people that Mahomes will be fully cleared this week, and also the knowledge that when they tell him he can go, he will really go. So the plan is to be smart with it, and make sure everyone is doing what’s going to put him in the best position to be at his best from September through February, not just ready for Week 1.
It remains to be seen how close to 100% Mahomes will look once he’s allowed in live drills at practice. Regardless, if the expectations of Breer’s sources come to fruition, it would be just another amazing, incredible feat for the legendary quarterback to take the field and work on the same level with his teammates on the first day of this year’s campaign.
