Trey Amos' encouraging rookie start came to a disappointing end with a broken fibula after 10 games. The Washington Commanders have given the cornerback all the time he needs to get right, and now they might be getting their payoff.
The No. 61 overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft revealed via his Twitch stream that he should be fully healthy for the start of training camp. Amos is bullish about his outlook after missing so much time. And if this is the end of his health problems, it could change everything for the Commanders' secondary.
Amos has the size, length, and physicality to thrive in Daronte Jones' defensive scheme. He's an accomplished tackler, tracks the ball well downfield, and can make things extremely uncomfortable for opposing wideouts in contested catch situations.

He wasn't perfect, but it wasn't hard to see why the Commanders instantly thought this was a draft steal.
Obviously, the Commanders will take a cautious approach with Amos over the summer. He could end up being their long-term CB1 with a little extra polish, so they can ill afford any more setbacks during such a critical stage of his development.
Ramping him up gradually to ensure he is ready to feature in Week 1 against the Philadelphia Eagles remains the goal, and the Ole Miss product's positive update doesn't change that fact.
The sooner Amos gets up to full speed, the better.
Jones has ambitious plans, so he needs all his top performers fit and firing throughout the entire campaign. While the second-year pro might not be classed as a franchise cornerstone yet, he's got the potential to be one. And if Amos responds positively to his new coordinator's demands, he could quickly surge into game-changer territory.
This is all predicated on health. Amos is making good progress, but he's no good to the Commanders if he's on the sidelines.
It's that simple.
If Amos can stay healthy, the Commanders should have a productive trio with him alongside Mike Sainristil and Amik Robertson. General manager Adam Peters also signed Rasul Douglas recently, who's also got some encouraging production that could be a massive upgrade to the rotation. If 2023 second-round pick Quan Martin switches back to the nickel, the defensive backfield might be a lot better than people think.
Amos has a bigger burden to shoulder than most, but he's also got the talent to plow through his ceiling. And this positive development will only raise optimism among fans about what he could potentially accomplish in Year 2 of his professional career.
