The Los Angeles Lakers are still trying to put the right pieces around Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves. Throughout the offseason, the organization has made it clear it wants to build with younger talent.
Even after signing Matisse Thybulle on Monday morning, the Lakers remain in the market for a starting-caliber wing. One of their top targets is Jonathan Kuminga.
“There is mutual free agent interest between Jonathan Kuminga and the Lakers, per Jovan Buha. Los Angeles continues to work behind the scenes to secure Kuminga’s commitment as their new wing addition,” NBA reporter Evan Sidery wrote.
Last week, Los Angeles also signed Ziaire Williams to add more depth on the wing. It was unclear whether that move would impact the Lakers' pursuit of Kuminga, but recent reports suggest it has not.
“There remains strong mutual interest between the Lakers and Jonathan Kuminga as a sign-and-trade route continues to be explored. Kuminga would immediately become LA’s starting power forward alongside Walker Kessler in their newly revamped frontcourt,” Sidery wrote.
After signing Thybulle, the Lakers may no longer have the assets the Atlanta Hawks are seeking in a potential sign-and-trade for Kuminga. As a result, Los Angeles has reportedly checked in with the Dallas Mavericks about PJ Washington, who has surfaced in trade discussions.
“The Lakers checked in with the Mavericks on PJ Washington. After Los Angeles’ last transaction with Dallas, the all-time shocking Luka Doncic trade, it’s unknown whether ownership would sign off here. A potential contingency plan for LA, if they don’t acquire Jonathan Kuminga,” Sidery posted.
Washington would be a significant addition for the Lakers, as Doncic already developed strong chemistry with him during their time together in Dallas. If Los Angeles is unable to acquire Kuminga, Washington could quickly become the team's top alternative.
Washington is currently on an $88 million contract with the Mavericks. The athletic forward fits the mold of the starting-caliber wing the Lakers have been searching for. It remains unclear what Dallas would seek in return, but Los Angeles could pursue Washington aggressively if it misses out on Kuminga.
