Unsurprisingly, there’s been a sense of division among the recent narratives involving New York Jets running back Breece Hall.
Some NFL pundits believe the Jets were wrong to extend Hall, while fans have questioned whether he’s become one of the league’s more underappreciated running backs.
Considering how the national media has treated the Jets throughout the offseason, we should be lucky no one has predicted he’ll be a colossal bust … not yet, at least.
All of the talk about Hall’s new contract and his status among the game’s top rushers has made it easy to forget how he’ll fit in offensive coordinator Frank Reich’s system.
If all goes to plan, Hall and Reich could be in for a sensational season.
Frank Reich’s tight end-heavy offense is excellent news for Breece Hall
The Jets are expected to use more two-tight-end sets, with Jeremy Ruckert likely serving as an added blocker.
Although sophomore Mason Taylor and 2026 first-round pick Kenyon Sadiq can also block, it’s far likelier they’ll be counted on more for their receiving skills.
The more tight ends, the better chance Hall has at setting a career-high in rushing yards.
Even when he hasn’t had a dominant bellcow in the backfield, Reich has a proven history of coaching successful rushing offenses.
In 10 years as an offensive coordinator, Reich has had a top-11 rushing attack five times. That includes the 2017 Eagles team that finished No. 4 and won the Super Bowl.
Colts running back Jonathan Taylor led the league with 1,811 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2021. Indianapolis had the league’s second-best rushing offense, only behind Jalen Hurts, Miles Sanders, and the Eagles.
Don’t sleep on the possibility of Hall climbing into the borderline elite tier this year.
Last year marked Hill’s first 1,000-yard campaign, and he’s averaged 4.5 yards per attempt since entering the league. He’s also still only 25 years old and has yet to reach 250 carries in a season.
I’m personally interested to see how Reich uses Hall as a receiving threat.
Hall had 76 receptions in 2023, but his catches have steadily decreased over the last two years. His 36 receptions last season were his fewest since his injury-shortened rookie season.
You won’t regret buying high on Hall. For all of the Jets’ issues, pairing him with Reich will prove to be the right move.
Whether or not that duo can help save Aaron Glenn’s job, though, remains to be seen.
