Chelsea wonderkid Jesse Derry helps embarrass BlueCo after 7-0 hammering

BlueCo are actually earning some praise from Chelsea supporters at the moment, with a £117m move for Morgan Rogers imminent. But Jesse Derry has just played a part in embarrassing Chelsea’s owners.

With Marco Palestra and Xabi Alonso arriving at Chelsea, and Rogers soon to follow, Chelsea fans are actually starting to offer their owners praise. BlueCo seemed to have learned from their past mistakes.

Chelsea's potential starting XI for 2026/27

At the end of the season, Chelsea fans could not have been more frustrated. The hiring of Liam Rosenior, the lack of experienced players signed, and Enzo Maresca’s exit all contributed to a dismal 10th position.

But over in France at Strasbourg, things are not so pretty. Gary O’Neil has left his post as gaffer while Mike Penders, Emmanuel Emegha, Valentin Barco, David Fofana and Aaron Anselmino are leaving.

Jesse Derry helps Sporting embarrass BlueCo in huge 7-0 win

Teenage winger Jesse Derry has joined Sporting on a season-long loan from Chelsea, after Geovany Quenda arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer. Against Celtic, Sporting fans were impressed with him.

Sporting’s second pre-season game of the summer came on Monday night, a clash between Sporting and Strasbourg. The former would win 7-0, and Derry was introduced on the hour mark for his second outing.

The Chelsea winger might not have scored or laid on an assist, but he did provide two pre-assists as the Portuguese side ran riot. Chelsea target Maxi Araujo also got his name on the score sheet for Sporting.

Derry is already making an impression in Portugal

Sporting fans were surprised by Derry’s cameo against Celtic last weekend, and his interview after the game continued to attract attention. Especially as he is wearing Cristiano Ronaldo’s old number, 28.

Derry says he is learning Portuguese and quickly trying to cope with the speed of Sporting’s training. But his impressive outing against Strasbourg is more proof that he can both adapt and excel at this level.

Sporting and Derry face Monaco on Saturday before the real thing starts in just over a fortnight. The Liga NOS side will be hoping to launch a title charge starting against Estrela away and then Vitoria at home.

Derry, of course, signed a new contract at Chelsea before departing. But if the winger is to have any future at Chelsea, he needs to have a good season at Sporting – and he has made an impressive start.
