As the NBA world waits for LeBron James to decide where he wants to play next, rumors have been swirling about when the 41-year-old superstar would make the announcement and where he is headed. Several sources have claimed to deduce James’ free agency decision-making process, but his agent, Rich Paul, has now clarified that all these comments are merely speculation.
On the latest episode of his own podcast, Game Over with Max Kellerman, Paul decided to clarify that nobody knows when and how LeBron James plans to choose his next destination.
Max Kellerman began the segment by pointing out that Pat Riley, in his recent comments, shared that he isn’t incessantly calling Rich Paul to find out when James plans to make up his mind.
“Pat’s not doing that, but neither is anyone else. And that’s not because there’s no want, but rather me telling them that they don’t have to do that,” Paul clarified.
“We don’t need what these people perceive and what people are trying to put out on their shows, letting older guys say what they think. No one, I’ll say it again, none of these people know anything. Nobody knows anything, and I say that respectfully because we haven’t made it to where anyone knows anything.”
“So I think it’s important for people to understand that we’re not making this about attention, or a spectacle. It’s not about a decision or anything like that. He has a choice to make, a business choice to make,” Paul continued.
“We’re not gonna sit here and allow someone else to decide when he makes that decision or that choice. It’s a business choice that he’s making. I think as an athlete, why is it that an athlete has to rush his choice?”
“From a business perspective, if you are choosing between jobs, high-level jobs, and you’re a big-time executive who has earned the right with arguably the best resume in the history of your job, who is rushing you? Nobody.”
They even went on to discuss NBA Commissioner Adam Silver’s recent remarks, where Paul clarified that it has even been made clear to Silver that he can’t rush LeBron James about his decision.
“It’s the lowest hanging fruit for when you don’t have the information,” Paul further added about critics who say LeBron James is delaying his decision because he loves the attention.
Subsequently, Rich Paul dove into his advice to James through the free agency process.
“My advice has been ‘don’t just value the paper.’ Because the paper in July is different than when you get into training camp, when you get into January. There’s a lot of things to think through.”
“When everything looks good on paper, as an athlete, you naturally have the confidence that I can change everything and anything in July. But where you’re at when the battle actually starts, and you start to see tendencies and habits, and you start to see how things operate daily.”
“I just say you have to take your time to think things through because there’s no perfect situation. But my thing is I would rather have no expectations and then get a surprise than have all these expectations just to be disappointed,” Paul concluded.
Hence, we are still at a stage where nobody knows where the 41-year-old superstar is headed. If he listens to Rich Paul’s advice after coming up with the shortlist of the final three teams he is looking into: the 76ers, the Heat and the Cavaliers, then he will likely go to the Heat.
Both the 76ers and the Cavaliers have players who have historically shown questionable habits when it comes to the postseason (namely James Harden and Joel Embiid). Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo has consistently performed well in the playoffs but has just needed the right team to help him through.
But as Paul said, even what I’m thinking is just conjecture and speculation at this point. It remains to be seen where LeBron James heads this summer.
