The Pacers were rumored to be a dark horse in the LeBron James sweepstakes. However, when speaking about his pitch to the superstar on the “Pat McAfee Show,” Pacers superstar Tyrese Haliburton revealed how he knew Indiana had no chance of signing him.
“Bron being my teammate? It’s not looking good,” Haliburton began. “I texted him before the Fanatics Fest and said, ‘Hey, you should come be a Pacer.’ He responded with six laughing-crying emojis. I thought it was two. When I said it during the interview, I thought it was two. When I went back and looked at it, it was six.”
Tyrese Haliburton was one of the panelists to interview LeBron James at the Fanatics Fest. While this would provide an ideal platform for the guard to pitch the idea of joining the Pacers, Haliburton noted:
“I think I did a pretty good job. I like to think I did a pretty good job… [But] He tried to avoid every free agency question at that point. But that was the first time he publicly acknowledged that he had to make a big decision and the things that he’s concerned about.”
As Haliburton mentioned, there has been considerable mystery regarding LeBron James’ current stance on free agency. While it is understood that the superstar will be returning to play next season, there has been virtually no conclusive update on where he truly intends to go, highlighting how tight his circle is.
Needless to say, every team around the league still wants LeBron James. Whether it is from a competitive or marketing standpoint, James brings enough to the table to position himself as an appealing asset. Haliburton built upon this by adding:
“I believe that he said if he wanted to go to any of the 30 NBA teams that everybody would say, ‘Please.'”
While Tyrese Haliburton makes a solid point in touching on James’ versatility and how it allows him to adapt and thrive in every system, it is evident that the 41-year-old has some priorities in mind. With earlier reports indicating that his decision would eventually be motivated by happiness, it is fair to assume that the Pacers’ chances, while intriguing, were never promising.
At the moment, it remains difficult to gauge what “happiness” means for LeBron James. If it means winning a title, sources suggest that the Philadelphia 76ers remain the best bet. However, if legacy is a greater motivator, the Cleveland Cavaliers may have a better shot.
In more recent developments, some even suggest that accessibility to playing golf could be a major factor for the superstar this summer. Hence, should this become a priority, the Miami Heat and the Golden State Warriors remain in the running. Given that the superstar has everything he needs to make a decision, all we can do is wait.
