Jack Grealish posted pictures of himself training with a smile on his face as Manchester City's pre-season officially began. New coach Enzo Maresca welcomed the first batch of players through the doors of the City Football Academy as he shapes his squad for the campaign ahead.
Grealish was not part of the group session as he works his way back from the injury that cost him more time on loan at Everton last season. However, the 30-year-old suggested he will soon be fit again as he goes through the final stages of his recovery. "Nice to see everyone, am nearly there! Hopefully not long now till back training for good," he said.
Maresca has a big decision ahead of him with Grealish. The Blues head off on a pre-season tour next Tuesday without many of their senior players who have been at the World Cup with their national teams.
Grealish could be useful to have around, but last summer Pep Guardiola left the player out of his squad for the Club World Cup to enable him to sort a transfer. The former Villa star secured a loan move to Everton and impressed on Merseyside before injury ended his year prematurely.
City coach Maresca was at the Etihad for Grealish's best year in a City shirt during the Treble campaign, but must decide with sporting director Hugo Viana whether the England international can play any part for the Blues this season. Giving him a tour spot (or not) would be a significant indicator, although it could also be that the trip comes too early for the player in his continued rehabilitation.
Grealish is into the final year of his contract at the Etihad, having signed a six-year deal when he completed his £100m move in 2021. This is the last summer where City could get a transfer fee for him unless a change of direction saw him signing a new deal.
