Cobblers have won the race to sign young striker Matty Warhurst from Manchester City after seeing off strong competition for his signature.
The 19-year-old, who was reportedly wanted by a number of clubs this summer, including Stockport, Swindon, Cambridge and Burton, has signed a three-year contract after Northampton agreed an undisclosed fee with the eight-time Premier League champions.
Viewed as a classic number nine, Warhurst’s bio on Man City’s website says he is ‘often the focal point of the attack, causing trouble for the opposition by holding the ball up or getting in behind the defence. When needed, he can also be called upon to play on the wing with his pace and clinical crossing also proving difficult to defend for the opposition. He is a cool and calm finisher.”
Warhurst, who turns 20 in September, has scored 61 goals in 97 games for various City sides in the last few seasons, including 36 goals in 41 games for the under-18s before adding 13 goals in 18 Premier League 2 appearances and eight goals in 11 FA Youth Cup games.
The son of former Blackburn, Bolton and Sheffield Wednesday player Paul, Warhurst started out in Oldham’s academy before joining Man City in 2019. He’s progressed through the ranks at the Etihad Stadium and has also played for England at various different age groups, and was part of the Three Lions Under-17 World Cup squad in 2023.
