Chelsea are looking to tie down young striker Shim Mheuka to a new contract before they send him out on loan, and they’re making progress.

An update from Simon Johnson at the Athletic claims that things are “progressing well” in terms of Shim Mheuka’s new contract.

The youth team striker has a year left on his current deal, plus a one year club option to extend. But his superb form in the under-21s means that Chelsea are keen to lock him down to a long term contract with a major pay rise.

The PL2 player of the season last year scored 18 goals in 19 games and has already made nine first team appearances for the Blues. He’s done more than enough to deserve a big raise and a long deal.

Once Shim is signed up, it will be time for him to go on loan. We’re sure work is being done on that front at the same time as work on the contract.

A Championship move would seem the most obvious – the youngster needs a destination where he can play every week at the senior level. There are plenty of teams in the second tier who would love a goal machine like that on their books.

In other news…

Aston Villa are about to make their big sale, with Morgan Rogers coming to Chelsea, which would then free up Unai Emery’s team to do some spending of their own.

Alejandro Garnacho is listed in the same piece as another option for Villa. He would be cheaper, but perhaps less tempting as a target.
