Arsenal are said to be interested in a defender this summer as they look to spark their summer transfer business into life. The Gunners have taken their time with their business so far, yet to make any big moves, with Chelsea managing to hijack the proposed signing of Aston Villa superstar Morgan Rogers.
Mikel Arteta wants clear upgrades this summer as he and his side look to go one further in the Champions League while also retaining their Premier League crown. A new number 8 and a new left-winger are said to be at the top of Arteta's list of priorities, while squad players who leave, like Leandro Trossard who already has, are going to need to be replaced.
Arsenal considering move for talented centre-back
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta celebrates Champions League win against Atletico Madrid
Arsenal have a wealth of options at centre-back, but they could lose one over the course of this summer, and even if they don't, they are always on the lookout for top young talents. Como's Jacobo Ramón is one of those talents, with the Spain under-21 international having impressed since joining from Real Madrid's youth setup.
Ramón had only managed three Real Madrid senior appearances prior to joining Como, linking up with Cesc Fabregas, but he went on to play a key role for the Italian club last season, helping them to Champions League qualification with 32 league appearances.
Spanish centre-backs are likely to be en vogue after the World Cup, where La Roja conceded one goal all tournament, and with 19-year-old Pau Cubarsi playing a central role in that effort.
But Ramón's efforts have stood on their own, and it's no surprise to see teams like Arsenal being linked, with HandofArsenal reporting that the Gunners have expressed an interest this summer. The problem? Como area headed for the Champions League, and they have zero interest in allowing Ramón to leave. The youngster is under contract until 2030.
Fabregas on Ramón being a 'perfect fit'
COMO CESC FABREGAS
Fabregas is always going to want a ball-playing centre-back in his teams, and it's for that reason Ramón has fit so well at Como. “The numbers of Jacobo Ramón do not surprise me. He was perfect for our game," Fabregas said last season. He added after another game: “The only doubt we had was whether he would compete in Italian football, how he would adapt to a game as competitive as this.”
Ramón is yet to win a senior appearance, which is no surprise given the competition in the world champions' squad. The likes of Real Madrid's Dean Huijsen and Aston Villa's Pau Torres, who have been reliable for La Roja, couldn't get into the World Cup squad. But Luis de la Fuente won't be blind to Ramón's progress, being a huge supporter of youth talent, and that senior cap could come during the next Nations League campaign if his form continues.
