Barcelona assistant manager and former Liverpool star Thiago Alcantara has emerged as a surprise backroom target for Chelsea to join Xabi Alonso’s coaching staff at Stamford Bridge.
Xabi Alonso has built a trusted coaching setup at Chelsea, surrounding himself with familiar minds like assistant managers Sebastian Parrilla and Calum McFarlane, alongside first-team coach Alberto Encinas.
Adding Thiago Alcantara would bring another dimension. Since retiring at Liverpool in 2024, Thiago immediately stepped into coaching, joining Hansi Flick’s backroom staff at Barcelona as an assistant manager.
His understanding of Alonso’s tactical philosophy, paired with his fresh experience helping manage Barca’s high-pressing midfield setup, makes him a brilliant option.

Thiago Alcantara is one to watch with Chelsea
Chelsea ITK Simon Phillips is claiming that Thiago Alcantara could come in as part of Xabi Alonso’s staff, when talking on his YouTube channel.
“Former Liverpool player Thiago, who is now the assistant manager of Barcelona, keep an eye on him. He’s a name I’ve been given. So yeah, definitely lots of interesting bits. I think that story might come out pretty soon.”
Thiago and Alonso share a rich history together on the pitch. They spent three seasons as teammates at Bayern Munich from 2014 to 2017, dominating German football and winning three consecutive Bundesliga titles. Additionally, both midfielders shared the dressing room for the Spanish national team.
Thiago’s potential role at Chelsea
Having spent three years alongside Alonso at Bayern Munich, Thiago shares his exact football philosophy centered on midfield control and sharp pressing.
At Stamford Bridge, his primary role would focus on specialised unit training, developing young midfielders in press resistance, vision, and positioning. Especially with players like Valentin Barco, Marco Palestra, Emmanuel Emegha and Dastan Satpaev coming in from all over the place.
Fluent in four languages and having only retired in 2024, Thiago would also act as an immediate cultural bridge.
