Fenway Sports Group have confirmed talks over a strategic investment into Liverpool Football Club by a consortium backed by the billionaire Mittal family.
A statement from FSG, via the Financial Times, confirms: “An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
It is maintained that there is no certainty over an agreement, but talks are ongoing over a deal that would value the club at over $6 billion.
The proposal is described as a “significant minority stake,” which could be anywhere up to 49 percent but would maintain FSG as controlling shareholder.

Bhatia is the son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, with the family’s investment portfolio including a controlling stake in T20 cricket team the Rajasthan Royals and the second-largest stake in the Boston Celtics.
Ahead of a potential investment into Liverpool, Bhatia has agreed to transfer his shareholding in Championship club QPR to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam to avoid any issues when it comes to multi-club ownership.
This is not the first time FSG have sought outside investment into Liverpool itself and comes after they shelved their own plans to purchase another club.
That decision prompted the departure of their CEO of football Michael Edwards this month, with the former Liverpool sporting director having largely taken the role to oversee a portfolio of clubs.

According to the Sunday Times Rich List, Lakshmi Mittal and his family were the eighth-wealthiest UK residents in 2025 with a net worth of £15.44 billion.
FSG’s own portfolio includes the Boston Red Sox, Boston Common Golf and RFK Racing, while they are named as strategic partners of the Mittal-owned Rajasthan Royals.
Published in May, Forbes‘ latest valuation of Liverpool was $6.2 billion, below only Real Madrid ($9.5bn), Barcelona ($7.5bn) and Man United ($7.2bn) in world football.
