QPR owner in talks to buy stake in Liverpool

Liverpool FC are reportedly in talks to sell a minority stake to QPR ownership according to reports.

A group of investors led by Amit Bhatia, backed by Queens Park Rangers (QPR) owner Lakshmi Mittal, who holds a 19% stake, is reportedly looking to buy a minority stake at Liverpool FC.

A report from the Financial Times asserts: “A consortium of investors led by Amit Bhatia and backed by the Mittal family is in talks to buy a significant minority stake in Liverpool Football Club, in a deal that would value the English Premier League side at more than $6bn.”

“The investor group headed by Bhatia, the son-in-law of steel tycoon and billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, has hired advisers to work on the offer and is in active talks with Liverpool’s current US owners Fenway Sports Group, according to people familiar with the matter.”

FSG confirmed the consortium’s interest in a statement to the FT. “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club,” it said.

Bhatia is a director of Queens Park Rangers and has held roles at the Championship club since first buying a stake in 2007. He is also chairman of Breedon Group and a managing director of AyBe Capital Advisers.

FSG bought Liverpool for £300m in 2010. The club’s value has grown substantially since, with Forbes previously estimating it at more than £4bn.

This would not be the first time FSG has brought in outside investment without relinquishing control.

In September 2023, the group sold a minority stake worth between $100m and $200m to US private equity firm Dynasty Equity, representing between 1.9% and 3.8% of the club.

FSG said at the time that the money would go toward paying down pandemic-era debt and funding capital projects, including the Anfield Road stand and a new training centre.

FSG has previously stated that Liverpool are not for sale, dismissing separate reports of interest from other parties in recent years. The talks with the Bhatia-led consortium are described as being for a minority position, rather than a takeover of the club.
