Valentín Barco to Chelsea: Fabrizio Romano has confirmed it: Chelsea have agreed a deal to sign 21-year-old Argentine midfielder Valentín Barco from RC Strasbourg, with the player expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge this month. Valued at €40m, Barco’s move completes a journey that started with an £8.47m permanent transfer to Strasbourg from Brighton just last summer. Chelsea’s BlueCo ownership structure made this route almost inevitable. Strasbourg have functioned as a development platform, and Barco’s 2025/26 season proved exactly why that model works.
How has he performed?
The numbers back the hype. Barco made 43 appearances for Strasbourg across all competitions, registering three goals and nine assists. In Ligue 1 specifically, he ranked first in the entire Strasbourg squad for assists (9), big chances created (23) and key passes (69), finishing the season with a Sofascore rating of 7.32, the highest at the club.
He averaged 1.5 key passes per game in the league, operating primarily from the left half-space and increasingly in central midfield rather than as a conventional left-back. That positional evolution matters enormously for what Chelsea now expect from him.
Strasbourg confirmed their readiness to let him go once the season concluded. Barco himself bid farewell to the club’s supporters after their final Ligue 1 match, a 5-4 win over AS Monaco, before posting an emotional message on Instagram. He turns 22 on 23 July, so Chelsea essentially land him at peak developmental age. At Stamford Bridge, he joins a squad that already contains Enzo Fernández, Moisés Caicedo and Romeo Lavia. His versatility, capable of operating in multiple midfield roles, gives Xabi Alonso genuine options without duplicating what he already has.
