According to Football Insider, the Red Devils are now “plotting” to signing Tottenham star Djed Spence, who defied critics of his selection in England’s controversial World Cup squad by excelling in the Three Lions’ run to the semi-finals of the competition.
The story suggests that Spurs are open for business, as they look to continue their own stunning summer recruitment drive that has seen them spend well over £200m on new talent already. Serie A side Inter and United’s rivals Liverpool are also thought to be in the mix, with Spence’s stock rising considerably after his impressive performances in North America.
The 3AM Verdict: There’s no denying that Spence enjoyed an excellent World Cup with England, and the fact he can play on either flank is another big plus in his favour. Star defender William Saliba looks set to be out for a number of months with a back injury suffered while playing for France, meaning his rock-solid partnership with Gabriel will be out of service for quite some time.
A tasty nugget buried in the Athletic’s latest Transfer Deal Sheet suggests that Aston Villa and England star Ezri Konsa has emerged as a target. However, it’s also said that Villa’s valuation of the player - a fee isn’t mentioned, although reports elsewhere have previously suggested over £50m - is well in excess of what the Gunners are willing to pay.
The 3AM Verdict: Konsa is certainly good enough to play for Arsenal, but he’d be a short-term fix who would give them a real headache to consider just a few months down the line - what exactly would they do with him once Saliba is back? It’s worth noting that Konsa can play at right-back, but they’d still be better off going for John Stones, who wouldn’t cost them a penny.
