Colombia officially call up Liverpool midfielder for summer friendlies

Liverpool midfielder has been named in Colombia’s squad for their international fixtures.

Andoni Iraola and his Liverpool squad have travelled to the United States ahead of their pre-season fixtures against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds United.

The Reds boss has taken a 31-man group to Chicago for a crucial period of preparation and experimentation ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.

Summer signing Victor Munoz will not link up with the squad just yet after winning the World Cup final with Spain on Sunday. However, Jeremy Jacquet, Liverpool’s other major summer arrival, has joined the group and is ready to make an impression.

Despite the start of pre-season, Liverpool’s transfer activity continues, with the club still being linked with several attacking options.

Ferran Torres has emerged as a name of interest after scoring Spain’s World Cup-winning goal, while PSG winger Bradley Barcola remains one of the most prominent players linked with a move to Anfield.

Liverpool have also completed the signing of highly rated Colombian teenager Samuel Martinez from Atletico Nacional.

The Reds have agreed a deal worth around £750,000 for the 17-year-old attacking midfielder, who attracted interest from several leading European clubs, including Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund.

Martinez completed his medical on Merseyside over the weekend before signing a five-year contract. As part of the agreement, Atletico Nacional will receive a percentage of any future sale.

The youngster will remain with the Colombian club for another 12 months and is expected to join Liverpool next summer after turning 18 in April.

The Reds will continue to monitor his development, with Martinez also expected to feature for Colombia at the U17 World Cup later this year.

Martinez was part of the Colombia side that won the South American U17 Championship in April, providing assists in the semi-final victory over Brazil and the final win against Argentina.

He has been officially called up to the latest Colombia U17 squad for a double-header against Chile on July 28 and July 30 as part of preparations for the tournament in November.
