It came just days after Town’s win over FC Isle of Man as preparations for the new season continue to gather momentum, and Cowan was delighted with another encouraging run-out.
He said: “Really good. I’m really pleased with the lads tonight.
“The whole focus is on just having a good attitude, good application, staying healthy of course, which is really important at this stage of pre-season, and working on our process.
“There were a lot of boxes ticked tonight, but lots for us to work on still. But yeah, really pleased with the workout and how we conducted ourselves.”
All eight of Town’s summer signings featured at the Croud Meadow for the first time.
Ruffels, one of the players retained by Shrewsbury this summer, headed home the decisive goal just before the hour mark, finishing off a move he had started himself.
“It's great when it's something that you’ve worked on,” Cowan added.

“When you work on what we call a restart press. When that comes to fruition, that’s great.
“It’s always great to score, of course. But as I say, those things are a bonus at the moment.
“We understand that performances are going to be massive on our agenda at the moment. We’ll get to the results, hopefully, when the season kicks in.”
Town welcome Championship side West Brom on Saturday for their next test of pre-season.
