Jeff Bezos has reportedly been approached by a consortium in talks to buy a stake in Liverpool - the Amazon founder who is the fourth-wealthiest man on the planet boasting a net worth exceeding £190billion.

On Tuesday, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), confirmed Amit Bhatia was leading a consortium that has shown interest in investing in the Premier League club. Bhatia formerly co-owned and directed Queens Park Rangers.

In a statement to our sister publication, the Liverpool ECHO, FSG said: "An investment consortium led, managed and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club."

Sky News reports that Bezos has discussed the possibility of joining Bhatia's group. The 62-year-old is not certain to invest, however.

The consortium is believed to already have the support of Lakshmi Mittal, Bhatia's father-in-law. He has a net worth of over £20bn and spearheaded a takeover of the Indian Premier League's Rajasthan Royals in May, valued at more than £1bn.

There is currently no investment agreement in place with Liverpool, but talks regarding a "significant minority stake" are in their initial stages. FSG previously struck a deal with Dynasty Equity in 2023.

Bezos is said to have reportedly explored bids for NFL teams in the past. The Seattle Seahawks and Washington Commanders have been a source of his interest, but he decided not to proceed with either deal.

The discussions taking place between FSG and Bhatia's consortium are said to value Liverpool at $6bn (£4.5bn). That would be broadly comparable to the valuation placed upon Manchester United when Ineos bought a stake two years ago.

Fenway Sports Group reportedly prefers to bring in minority partners to raise capital without relinquishing overall management of the club.

Consortium frontman Bhatia spent 18 seasons with QPR as co-owner and director before transferring his ownership stake to the majority shareholder, Ruben Gnanalingam.

Bhatia said: “Since joining the club in 2007, QPR has been a deeply important part of my life, and of my family’s life. Over nearly two decades we have shared promotions, relegations, unforgettable highs and painful lows, and the memories we have made at Loftus Road alongside the supporters will stay with us forever.“Being part of QPR has shaped me in many ways. It has taught me about resilience, responsibility and the importance of stewardship. I am especially proud of the work of QPR in the Community Trust, which reflects the best of the club and the extraordinary role it plays in the local community.“I step back from my formal responsibilities with pride, gratitude and affection. I want to thank the players, managers, staff, the Community Trust, my fellow board members and, above all, the fans, who have made me and my family feel part of the QPR family for so many years."
