Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, the fourth-richest person in the world, has been approached to join a consortium with plans to invest heavily into Liverpool FC.

A consortium led by Amit Bhatia, the son-in-law of billionaire Lakshmi Mittal, is in talks to purchase a stake in Liverpool worth up to 30 percent.

With the club valued at over $6 billion (£4.5bn), that would place their shareholding as worth around £1.35 billion.

Sky News now reports that Bezos, whose net worth is an estimated $257 billion (£192.2bn), has been approached to join Bhatia’s consortium.

While it is maintained there is no certainty that the Amazon founder will join the investment into Liverpool, discussions have already taken place.

Though significant, selling a 30 percent stake in Liverpool would still ensure Fenway Sports Group remain controlling shareholders and run the club.

There is no indication at this stage that a major investment would prelude FSG selling the club outright, with it reiterated that this would simply be a strategic partnership.

US private equity firm Dynasty Equity paid £164 million for a minority stake in Liverpool in 2023, which was largely used to cover the club’s debt.

Bhatia stepped down as director and co-owner of Championship side QPR on Tuesday, transferring his shareholding in the club to majority owner Ruben Gnanalingam.

That signalled the scale of his ambition to invest in Liverpool, avoiding any future disputes over multi-club ownership, with Bhatia having held his position as QPR since 2007.

Having built his staggering fortune through Amazon, Bezos has since diversified his empire across aerospace venture Blue Origin, the Washington Post and major global real estate assets.

Though yet to take a direct equity stake in a professional team, the 62-year-old is no stranger to top-tier sports, having previously eyed a takeover of NFL franchise the Washington Commanders while expanding Amazon Prime Video’s live sports broadcasting portfolio.

Liverpool were approached to take part in Amazon’s ‘All Or Nothing’ documentary series in 2018, but issued a firm rejection at the request of then-manager Jurgen Klopp.

Bezos is not the first high-profile billionaire linked with an investment into Liverpool, with sources dismissing any claims of a takeover bid from the world’s richest man Elon Musk last year.
