Hamburg have submitted an initial bid to Arsenal for Fabio Vieira as the newly-promoted Bundesliga club step up their efforts to sign the Portuguese midfielder on a permanent deal.
Vieira spent last season on loan with Hamburg and quickly established himself as one of the club’s standout performers, helping them secure promotion back to the Bundesliga.
The 26-year-old’s displays have made him a priority target for Hamburg this summer, but convincing Arsenal to sell is proving far from straightforward.
Speaking during the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria, Hamburg executive board member Eric Huwer confirmed that an offer has already been lodged with Arsenal.
“We’ve fallen a little bit in love with Fabio,” Huwer told supporters. “We’re fighting for him every day and have also submitted figures to Arsenal.”
However, the German club’s opening proposal has not been enough to persuade Arsenal to negotiate.
Huwer admitted the Gunners have shown little willingness to lower their demands at this stage of discussions.
“They’re not even budging yet,” he said.
Despite that setback, Hamburg remain hopeful a compromise can eventually be reached.
Huwer insisted the club are determined to continue talks but made it clear they will not jeopardise their financial stability to complete the transfer.
“We’re confident we can make Fabio a competitive offer within our means, without taking on any debt,” he added.
Vieira returned to Arsenal earlier this summer after the conclusion of his loan spell, but his long-term future at the Emirates Stadium remains uncertain.
The Portugal international joined Arsenal from Porto in 2022 with high expectations but has struggled to establish himself as a regular starter under Mikel Arteta.
Injuries and fierce competition for places have limited his opportunities, while Arsenal’s midfield has become increasingly competitive following further investment in recent transfer windows.
A permanent departure could therefore suit all parties.
Hamburg are eager to retain a player who became an influential figure during their promotion-winning campaign, while Arsenal could generate funds to reinvest elsewhere before the transfer window closes.
For now, though, Arsenal appear in no rush to sell.
The Gunners are understood to value Vieira higher than Hamburg’s opening proposal and are expected to hold firm unless their valuation is met or improved.
With the player believed to be open to continuing his career in Germany after an encouraging season, negotiations are expected to continue over the coming weeks.
Whether Hamburg can bridge the gap remains to be seen, but their public confirmation of a formal approach underlines just how highly Vieira is regarded after his successful loan spell in the Bundesliga.
