Arsenal Women have confirmed the signing of Spain international goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez on a permanent transfer following the expiry of her contract with Real Madrid.
The 27-year-old has signed a three-year contract at the Emirates Stadium, with the club holding the option to extend the deal by a further 12 months.
Misa arrives after an outstanding spell in Spain, where she established herself as one of Liga F’s leading goalkeepers.
She joined Real Madrid when the club launched its women’s team in 2020 and leaves as the most-capped player in the club’s history with 215 appearances.
The experienced shot-stopper was also appointed club captain in 2025 and won the prestigious Zamora Trophy twice, awarded to the goalkeeper with the best goals-against record in Spain’s top flight.
Speaking after completing the move, Misa expressed her excitement about beginning a new chapter in north London.
“I’m so proud to join this great club,” she told Arsenal’s official website.
“Arsenal is one of the top clubs in the world and I’m really excited to be part of the team and take on this new challenge.”
Misa strengthens an Arsenal goalkeeping department that was heavily tested by injuries last season.
Daphne van Domselaar established herself as the club’s first-choice goalkeeper after joining from Aston Villa, but injury problems disrupted parts of her campaign, while Anneke Borbe impressed whenever called upon.
The departures of Manuela Zinsberger, Naomi Williams and Barbora Votikova also created room for further reinforcement ahead of the new season.
At international level, Misa has earned 24 senior caps for Spain and was part of the squads that won the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 UEFA Women’s Nations League.
She also started all three of Spain’s group-stage matches during their victorious World Cup campaign before Cata Coll took over for the knockout rounds.
Her arrival means Arsenal now have three Spain internationals in the squad alongside Mariona Caldentey and fellow summer signing Ona Batlle.
Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley described the goalkeeper as a major addition to the club.
“We’re delighted to bring Misa to Arsenal,” Wheatley said. “She’s a proven goalkeeper at both club and international level and brings with her a wealth of experience.”
Head coach Renee Slegers added: “Misa is a top goalkeeper who has performed consistently at a high level for several years.”
“As well as her technical attributes, she has great presence and communication on the pitch and we believe she’ll be a strong addition to our goalkeeping unit.”
Misa will wear the No. 16 shirt as Arsenal continue strengthening a squad aiming to build on last season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League triumph and challenge for more major honours in the new campaign.
