Kostas Tsimikas has returned to Liverpool this summer after a “very tough and strange” loan spell with AS Roma, with the left-back “really happy to be back.”
Tsimikas is expected to stay as part of Andoni Iraola‘s squad for the new campaign as backup to first-choice left-back Milos Kerkez.
His return from Roma coincides with Andy Robertson‘s exit on a free transfer, with the Greek effectively replacing his former team-mate in the senior squad.
It represents a surprise return for the No. 21, who at one point had been considered likely to join Roma on a permanent transfer – only to clock just 1,050 minutes on the pitch for Gian Piero Gasperini last season.

Speaking to LFCTV at Liverpool’s pre-season camp in Chicago, Tsimikas said: “I couldn’t wait [to come back], to be honest.
“I had a very tough and strange season last year, but I’m fully here.
“I trained so hard alone in the off-season. And during the last season, even if I didn’t have so much game time for some reasons.
“I’m really here, I’m really happy to be back, really glad and I can’t wait to wear the jersey.”

While Tsimikas failed to secure the starting spot in his previous five seasons at Liverpool, he will at least provide stability and experience at a time of significant change at Anfield.
Not only is there a new head coach but also a new-look squad without Robertson, Mo Salah and Ibrahima Konate – three of their long-term leaders – and a more youthful core.
But Tsimikas is confident the atmosphere within the group remains the same, with the 30-year-old feeling like he “never left.”

“For me, it’s like I never left the club,” he explained.
“It has a very big sense in my heart always. I’m very happy even now I came back, I just feel like I never left.
“The mood is in the best levels, even the young kids are very positive and try to give everything. All together, we try to achieve our goals.”
Tsimikas is likely to feature prominently during the friendlies against Sunderland, Wrexham and Leeds in the United States and could even provide valuable cover at centre-back.
