Arsenal are ready to step up their pursuit of Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes, according to reports.
The Standard claim that the Gunners are “expected to accelerate” talks with the Magpies over the coming days.
Despite having made offers via intermediaries, the Premier League champions have still not had face-to-face discussions to sign Guimaraes.
However, that is likely to change soon, with manager Mikel Arteta having made the Brazilian international his top target for the summer transfer window.
How much could Guimaraes cost?
It is believed that two informal bids worth £55m and £65m have been rejected by Newcastle, who are reluctant to offload their talisman.
Some have suggested that Eddie Howe’s side could hold out for a fee in the region of £100m for the 28-year-old, but other sources suggest £75m to £80m may be enough for the move to go ahead.
Whatever the asking price, though, it seems Arsenal will have to substantially improve on the offers they have already put on the table.
The Arsenal target has received plenty of praise
Premier League’s all-time leading scorer and Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has been one of the most vocal supporters of Guimaraes over the years. Speaking back in 2024 after the Brazilian scored a brace against Nottingham Forest, he said:
“He was brilliant. He deserved it [player of the match]. He scored two wonderful goals. His all-round performance, I thought, was magnificent.”
“Everything good about Newcastle, he was at the heart of it. Whether he was keeping the ball, protecting the ball, adding that little bit of quality with his passing, his movement, his ability to find space that not many others can.”
Guimaraes has spent four and a half years at St James’ Park, but it is clear that the player is very keen on making the switch to the Emirates. We shall have to wait and see how things play out when official talks between Arsenal and Newcastle take place.
