Andoni Iraola’s latest press conference may have been polite and measured, but two comments stood out immediately.
The new Liverpool head coach said:
“We definitely need to sign a winger.”
He then added:
“In terms of defensive depth, I think we are very thin right now, so I think it’s a solution that we are trying to find, yes.”
For Liverpool supporters, the message could hardly have been clearer.
Iraola believes the squad still needs strengthening before the new season begins.
A Winger Is Still the Priority
Replacing Mohamed Salah was always going to be one of Liverpool’s biggest challenges.
While several players can operate in wide attacking roles, Iraola’s comments suggest he wants a specialist addition rather than simply reshuffling the existing squad.
That aligns with the numerous links to players such as Bradley Barcola and Rayan throughout the summer.
Liverpool clearly know this is an area that needs attention—and now their manager has effectively confirmed it publicly.
Defensive Depth Also a Concern
Perhaps even more revealing was Iraola’s assessment of the defence.
Describing Liverpool as “very thin” highlights that the club may not yet have enough depth to cope with a long Premier League and Champions League campaign.
Although Jeremy Jacquet and Giovanni Leoni are highly rated, both remain inexperienced at the highest level.
Injuries to key players last season exposed how quickly a squad can become stretched.
Iraola appears determined not to let that happen again.
A Direct Message to the Club
Managers rarely speak so openly about transfer needs unless they genuinely believe reinforcements are required.
Iraola did not demand specific players.
He did not criticise anyone.
But he made it perfectly clear that Liverpool are still short in key areas.
For FSG, Richard Hughes and the recruitment team, the expectation is obvious.
The squad is not yet complete.
Time to Act?
Liverpool supporters have grown increasingly frustrated by the lack of major movement in recent weeks.
Transfer rumours continue to circulate almost daily, but confirmed arrivals have been limited.
Iraola’s comments will only increase the pressure on the club to deliver before the transfer window closes.
The manager has publicly identified two priorities:
A new winger.
Greater defensive depth.
Those are now expectations rather than speculation.
Backing the Manager
FSG have consistently said they want to provide Liverpool managers with the tools needed to succeed.
Now they have an opportunity to demonstrate that commitment.
Iraola has laid out what he believes the squad still requires.
Whether Liverpool can deliver those additions before the deadline may have a significant impact on the club’s prospects this season.
One thing is certain.
The message from the Liverpool head coach could not have been much clearer.
Liverpool still need players.
Now it is up to the club to respond.
