Arsenal officially announce signing of Real Madrid goalkeeper

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of the former Real Madrid captain and experienced international goalkeeper after leaving the Spanish giants this summer.

Arsenal Women have confirmed the signing of Spain international goalkeeper Misa Rodriguez following the expiry of her contract at Real Madrid.

The 27-year-old joins the Gunners on a free transfer after bringing an end to a hugely successful spell in Spain, where she became Real Madrid’s all-time record appearance maker and club captain.

Rodriguez arrives in north London as Arsenal’s seventh signing of an ambitious summer transfer window and further strengthens Renée Slegers’ squad ahead of the new Women’s Super League campaign.

The experienced goalkeeper made 215 appearances during her time at Real Madrid, more than any other player in the club’s history, establishing herself as one of Europe’s most consistent goalkeepers.

At international level, Rodriguez has earned 24 senior caps for Spain and was part of the squad that lifted the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, starting all three group-stage matches before competing with Cata Coll for the number one shirt.

She joins an increasingly competitive Arsenal goalkeeping department alongside Daphne van Domselaar, Anneke Borbe and fellow summer arrival Isabella Damm.

Rodriguez also becomes Arsenal’s fifth free transfer of the summer, following the arrivals of Georgia Stanway, Ona Batlle, Selina Cerci and Geraldine Reuteler, highlighting the club’s impressive work in the transfer market.

Speaking after completing the move, Rodriguez said: “I’m so proud to join this great club. Arsenal is one of the top clubs in the world and I’m really excited to be part of the team and take on this new challenge. I want to help us compete for trophies and make more history, together with our supporters.”

Head coach Renée Slegers welcomed the signing, describing Rodriguez as “a top goalkeeper who has performed consistently at a high level for several years.”

Slegers added: “As well as her technical attributes, she has great presence and communication on the pitch and we believe she’ll be a strong addition to our goalkeeping unit, alongside Daphne, Anneke and Isabella.”

After winning the UEFA Women’s Champions League last season, Arsenal have wasted little time strengthening their squad as they prepare to challenge once again on multiple fronts.

The arrival of Rodriguez adds further experience, leadership and proven quality to an already impressive group, with Arsenal continuing to signal their intent ahead of the 2026/27 campaign.
