I have no idea if LeBron James will eventually select the Miami Heat as his next team. More than that, almost every fiber of my being believes that the team sharing a link to a future introductory press conference celebrating his return to South Beach means nothing and can be chalked up to internet sleuths making something out of nothing. The team has said the link was made live by mistake and one understands that these types of things happen as it’s important to always be prepared. Newspapers don’t begin writing obits for celebrities after they die but instead get one up within a few minutes by publishing something pre-written.
On a human level I feel pretty bad for whichever employee’s proactive thinking created this whole mess because now a relatively boring work task has become one of the biggest headlines in sports. It should be mentioned that this is just one data point, that probably doesn’t mean a thing at all, amid a deluge of winking and nodding from those in NBA circles who feel confident dropping breadcrumbs about James’ next destination. Considering those rumors have him going to a few different teams, not everyone pretending to be in the know will be proven correct.
It would be surprising if a handful of other teams haven’t done the work of creating future press conference links just in case that no one found out about. So, again, all signs point to this being nothing but a relatable gaffe.
Miami Heat’s LeBron James post
Except for one thing. Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but the link having a specific date makes it different than if the press conference in question was Time TBA. Why July 27? That’s next Monday. A long time for a lot of people to keep a big secret.
Just logistically, an announcement would come in advance of an introductory press conference. In this hypothetical timeline perhaps Thursday or Friday. Yet just when the mind starts to wander and obsess over if July 27 means anything or is just a random date, the copied art from Dwyane Wade’s statue unveiling being used as placeholder art kind of snaps things back to reality.
It would be super weird of the Heat get James days after saying this link is a big nothing burger. It’d be weirder if there is, in fact, a Monday press conference. But it could still happen.
