If the Denver Nuggets actually have to shed salary this offseason, they could be waiting for LeBron James to make his decision before doing so. The Nuggets, at least on paper, have a decent, but not great, roster. You can really never count this team out because of Nikola Jokic, but the team can be a lot better than they currently are.
My one question for Denver is what they're going to do with Peyton Watson and how that unfolds.
Again, there seems to be consensus in the NBA that until James makes his decision, we're not going to see much movement, which has been the case recently. It wouldn't be very surprising to see this all figured out once James makes his decision, mainly the Watson part.
The Nuggets, however, are still looking to shed salary to keep Watson around, per the latest report, and are trying to see whether Cam Johnson could be traded to do so.
“Reiterating something from yesterday, but the Nuggets are still hopeful that they wind up keeping Peyton Watson despite persistent rumors of a sign-and-trade. Part of that, though, depends on finding ways to shed salaries, and the Nuggets are still seeking a market for Cam Johnson,” Sean Deveney wrote.
Johnson is a really decent player in his own right, but I felt like last season didn't go according to plan in Denver for either side.
The Nuggets obviously made a big-time commitment by trading for him in a deal involving Michael Porter, and while he wasn't bad by any means, most were expecting a bit more. I don't think moving on from him is the right decision, but only time will tell if the Nuggets go in that direction.
