Liverpool are reportedly interested in signing Tottenham full-back Djed Spence after his impressive performances for England at the World Cup.
The Reds are severely low on squad depth right now, and with the news that Liverpool are expecting Conor Bradley to remain sidelined for quite some time, there is renewed need for a new full-back to be signed.
The only other ‘right back’ at Liverpool is Jeremie Frimpong, and recent reports suggest that the club views him more as an attacking option than a defender.
Joe Gomez is also a capable option on the right-hand side of defence, but his quality has never been an issue. Whether or not he can remain fit long enough to be a reliable option at right back is a bigger question.
Now, reports are suggesting that Liverpool are “taking a serious look” at Spence.
Djed Spence heads Liverpool list of full back transfer targets
According to a report from Anfield Index, Spence is a target for Liverpool but will cost a pretty penny.
Dave Davis said on the Anfield Index YouTube channel: “We went digging on this and Djed Spence is absolutely a player that Liverpool are looking at. That’s our info now. Liverpool absolutely are having a serious look at Djed Spence.”
Explaining further, he said: “Liverpool like him for a number of reasons. Number one, he is electric quick. He is an excellent one-on-one defender, as you’ve also seen, and he’s an excellent carrier.
“He’s 94th percentile for progressive carries, 96th percentile for carries into final third; he is quick, and he is an excellent one-on-one defender. He can play right-back and left-back at the same time, which means you just wonder, you know, you sell [Kostas] Tsimikas, and then you’ve got right-back and left-back cover there in Djed Spence.
“They’re gonna want top dollar. So they should. Spurs should be asking for something like 40 million quid because he’s homegrown. He’s just had a great World Cup.”
Liverpool could do a lot worse than signing Spence this summer, although given the ambition the North Londoners are showing this summer suggests they won’t be willing to let him go.
