With the 2026 FIFA World Cup now an increasingly distant memory, the football world’s focus is shifting back towards domestic matters, ahead of what’s promising to be another roller-coaster domestic season. Arsenal are looking to defend their Premier League title in the 2026/27 campaign, in what promises to be an enthralling, competitive race for top spot.
Meanwhile, it’s all-go on the transfer front, with the World Cup’s conclusion seeing a host of clubs in England’s top tier ramp up their activity in the market. Chelsea blew away Arsenal with a £117m deal to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, while the likes of Man United, Man City and Liverpool are all expected to be busy over the coming weeks.
Today’s rumours round-up begins at Stamford Bridge, where Chelsea are looking to finally enjoy a period of stability under high-profile new manager Xabi Alonso. The Blues’ pursuit of ex-Man City star John Stones, now a free agent, came to light over the past couple of days, and a fresh report from Football Insider suggests what may need to happen for Chelsea to get their man.
Stones, who excelled at the World Cup with England, is in the twilight period of his career at 32-years-old, but he’s said to want a two or three year contract to commit to the Blues, potentially ending his career at the club. Arsenal are also said to be highly interest in the ex-Everton gem, as they look to find short-term cover for the injured William Saliba.
The 3AM Verdict: Stones could very well turn his back on both Arsenal and Chelsea, and opt to join the likes of Juventus or Bayern Munich instead. If he does want to stay in England, however, a move to the Blues makes more sense. He can be the star man in their backline for the next couple of seasons, whereas Arsenal won’t know what to do with him once Saliba returns from injury before the end of the year.

Next up, it’s over to Elland Road, where Leeds have had a fairly quiet transfer window thus far. They lost star defender Pascal Struijk to Brighton, but managed to replace him with £34m man Tarik Muharemovic. Harry Wilson also joined on a free transfer, linking up with a host of his Wales international teammates at Elland Road.
According to Team Talk, Aston Villa are now “prioritising” hanging on to their goalkeeper Emi Martinez, after months of uncertainty regarding his future. This will be of great interest to Leeds, who could now have a clear run at Man City goalkeeper James Trafford. The report says that the Whites have already sounded City out over a potential move, and that they’re ready to “pay big money” to get the £27m man in.
The 3AM Verdict: Having Villa out of the picture to sign Trafford would be excellent news for Leeds, especially with Newcastle United thought to now be looking elsewhere. Having a potential England number one on their books would be a massive boost for the Whites, with the 23-year-old boasting the potential to be a star for both club and country for years to come.

Last up, it’s over to the West Midlands, where Aston Villa are preparing for one of their most hectic transfer windows in years. They’ve already splashed out close to £100m on the signings of Joao Gomes and Johan Manzambi, and are also pursuing Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho.
According to reports in Portugal, via Sport Witness, the club could see a move for Bayern Munich midfielder Joao Palhinha derailed by Benfica. The story says that the Portuguese giants are “refusing to give up” on their £25m-rated “priority target”, and that their manager Marco Silva’s close relationship with the player could be a deciding factor.
The 3AM Verdict: The player has already made it clear he won’t be staying with Bayern, so it could be a straight shootout between Villa and Benfica. Following Amadou Onana’s nightmare ACL injury during the World Cup, Villa need a quality replacement, and should do all they can to convince the ex-Spurs loan star they’re the right club for the next step of his career.
