Liverpool is among the frontrunners to sign one of the most-sought after midfielders in the Premier League if he is made available.

Crystal Palace standout Adam Wharton could be on the move this summer transfer window amid interest from top clubs in England, and Liverpool appear to be in a strong position if they are willing to shell out a huge fee that could end up exceeding $100 million.

It comes as new Reds manager Andoni Iraola was told Wharton and one other Premier League player would be a ‘perfect fit’ at Anfield.

Wharton is currently poised to stay at Selhurst Park after a season in which Crystal Palace won the UEFA Conference League, its third trophy in the last two campaigns alone.

The 22-year-old defensive midfielder has been a vital cog in the club’s success, hence his potential price tag reaching north of six figures.

If he leaves west London, Liverpool are currently given the second best odds (+250) of any club to secure Wharton’s signature, trailing only Chelsea, who are priced as the favorites at +110 odds.

If the Reds instead opt for PSG winger Bradley Barcola, who is believed to be the ‘top target’ and a more pressing need after the departure of club legend Mohamed Salah at the end of last season, it is unlikely another $100 million bid is made for someone like Wharton.

A new central midfielder may be more of a want than a need given Dominik Szoboszlai just signed a new contract extension and Ryan Gravenberch inked a six-year deal in March that will keep him at Anfield until 2032.

Alexis Mac Allister’s future is not set in stone, with two years remaining on his current deal and some questioning the Argentine’s place as a regular starter in Iraola’s side. Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott could well leave by the end of this summer, too.

Other clubs believed to be in contention for Wharton include Tottenham (+400), who already doled out more than $200 million on midfield signings Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes, Manchester United (+600), and Inter Milan (+900).

Whether it be Wharton or others, there is plenty still to be decided on the transfer front between now and the end of the window.
