Jurgen Klopp has already reached an agreement in principle to become the new head coach of Germany’s men’s national team.
The former Liverpool manager met senior German Football Association (DFB) officials in New York few days ago and is expected to sign a four-year contract.

Speaking on German TV at the World Cup final, Klopp said: “I have reached an agreement with Red Bull. A very generous one. There is nothing standing in the way.”
The role would mark Klopp’s first coaching position since ending his nine-year spell at Liverpool in 2024 and his first job in international football. After leaving Anfield, the German was appointed Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer.
Klopp was working as a pundit for German television during the World Cup and had previously been linked with a return to club management, including reported interest from Real Madrid.
The 59-year-old enjoyed a successful spell at Borussia Dortmund, winning two Bundesliga titles between 2008 and 2015, after previously managing Mainz 05 for seven years.
A key factor behind the rapid negotiations is believed to be Klopp’s relationship with Hans-Joachim Watzke, who worked closely with him at Dortmund and is now a DFB vice-president.
Germany are seeking a fresh start after another disappointing major tournament campaign, having been eliminated in the last 32 of the World Cup after losing to Paraguay on penalties.
According to Sky Sports in Germany, approval from the DFB’s supervisory board and shareholders is expected to be a formality. Klopp’s official unveiling could take place as early as Friday at the DFB campus in Frankfurt.
After Joachim Low guided Germany to their fourth World Cup triumph in 2014, the national team struggled at subsequent tournaments, failing to progress beyond the group stage in both 2018 and 2022, with Hansi Flick in charge for the latter campaign.
Julian Nagelsmann replaced Flick in September 2023 on an initial deal until Euro 2024, which Germany hosted. The team reached the quarter-finals before being eliminated by eventual champions Spain after extra time.
Nagelsmann’s contract was later extended through the 2026 World Cup and then Euro 2028, but he stepped down after overseeing Germany at two major tournaments.
