Mikel Arteta has admitted he “really likes” one player Arsenal have been linked with this summer ahead of 2026/27
Free agents can offer clubs a low-risk way to add experience during the summer window. When injury concerns arise in key positions, available players with proven Premier League quality become particularly appealing. Managers often turn to those they already know and trust.
Defensive depth is vital for any side aiming to compete on multiple fronts. A lengthy absence for a first-choice centre-back can force recruitment plans to accelerate. Short-term options who can step in immediately help maintain stability.

Mikel Arteta could turn to a player he “really likes” as Arsenal look to strengthen in defence. John Stones is available as a free agent after leaving Manchester City, and the Gunners are considering a move for the 32-year-old. Chelsea are also among the interested clubs.
The need for reinforcements has grown due to concerns over William Saliba’s back injury. A final decision on possible surgery is still pending, but a lengthy spell on the sidelines appears likely. Arsenal had already been seeking a versatile defender capable of covering multiple positions.

Mikel Arteta and Stones know each other from their time together at Manchester City. The Arsenal manager joined as Pep Guardiola’s assistant shortly before Stones arrived in 2016, and the pair worked together for three years. In January 2020, when linked with a move, Arteta said: “John is a player I really like. We followed him before we signed him when I was at City.
“I worked with him for many years. I know him well and when I look at centre-backs he has many attributes I like, but we are not interested in him.”
That stance could now have changed given Stones’ free-agent status and Arsenal’s defensive needs. His injury record would be a consideration, but the opportunity to add a proven performer without a transfer fee makes him an attractive short-term option.
Stones is currently enjoying time off after England’s run at the World Cup. Arsenal supporters will watch developments with interest as the club continues to assess options. A reunion with Arteta would add experience and leadership to the backline at a time when it is most needed.
Whether a deal materialises remains to be seen. The coming weeks will clarify Arsenal’s intentions as they finalise their summer business. Stones’ availability keeps him firmly in the conversation as the Gunners look to cover Saliba’s potential absence.
