After wrapping up early moves for defender Piero Hincapie and goalkeeper Illan Meslier, Arsenal can turn their attentions to other areas of the pitch. They already had four new signings by this time last year but they may decide a title-winning squad doesn't need quite as much tweaking.

For now it might be a case of clearing the decks while being selective with new additions. Central midfield appears to be a priority, though, while another attacking target is required after Chelsea won the race for Morgan Rogers.

Mikel Arteta has welcomed some players back into training, though those involved in the latter stages of the World Cup won't need to return for a while. The Gunners' first pre-season friendly isn't until August 1, away to Girona.

By the time that game rolls around, there might be some new names for Arsenal fans to get excited about. We've got the latest for you right here.

Contact made over Guimaraes

Newcastle United have contacted Arsenal to gauge their interest in Bruno Guimaraes, according to Sky Sports. The Tyneside club have reportedly taken the step after receiving no direct contact from the Gunners themselves.

It appears conversations have so far been taking place through intermediaries. With uncertainty reigning, Newcastle are said to worry their captain has been unsettled by the background chatter.

Eddie Howe's side have already lost Sandro Tonali this summer and could do without another midfielder jumping ship. Arsenal, meanwhile, are thought to have Bournemouth's Alex Scott in their sights as a potential midfield alternative.

Arsenal have welcomed Fabio Vieira back into pre-season training despite an offer for the playmaker from Hamburg. According to football.london, the Gunners have not been moved by the German side's approach for a player who impressed on loan last season.

Hamburg opted against triggering a £17m clause for a permanent deal. While board member Eric Huwer told Kicker the club is still keen, Arsenal may be awaiting bids from other suitors.

"We've kind of fallen in love with Fabio," Huwer said. "We're fighting for him every day and have also submitted figures to Arsenal. They're not even budging yet.

"We're confident we can make Fabio a competitive offer within our means, without taking on any debt."
