Bradley Barcola has emerged as Liverpool’s leading transfer target to address their needs on the wings, but is the Frenchman the right fit for Andoni Iraola‘s attack?
With Yan Diomande preferring a move to Paris Saint-Germain and Leipzig intent on retaining him this season, Liverpool have been left to look elsewhere to address their attacking needs.
Barcola has since come to the fore for the Reds, with the 23-year-old reportedly open to exploring a move as he enters the final two years of his contract in the French capital.
Liverpool are not the only interested suitor, such is the demand for wingers this summer, and with the World Cup now over, his future is expected to become clearer in the weeks to come.

Who is Bradley Barcola?
Barcola rose through the ranks at Lyon, graduating from their reserve side to make his professional debut in November 2021.
Less than two years later, he joined Paris Saint-Germain for a reported €45 million (£38.3m) fee, where he has since made 152 appearances (107 as a starter).
With 28 caps for France, he is one of the most established attacking options Liverpool have been linked to this summer, and he is still only 23.
Player Profile: Bradley Barcola
Barcola is an orthodox winger who, while comfortable playing on either side or through the middle, is regarded primarily as a left-sided player, which is also his preference.
The French international is direct and provides width, and would have the opportunity to establish himself as an attacking linchpin at Anfield, which is not a title he currently holds at PSG.
Despite PSG’s recent success, it would represent a significant step-up as Liverpool need to inject goals back into the team after Mo Salah‘s departure this summer.

Strengths
Iraola’s identity centres around rapid verticality, high physical output, and punishing teams after turnovers.
Barcola’s ball carrying, pace, and direct threat in open space would fit into Iraola’s system, with the winger ranking in the top 17th percentile for successful dribbles in Ligue 1 (1.85 per 90).
He also ranked in the top 10th percentile for possession won in the final third (1.18 per 90), and in the top three percent for touches in the opposition box (8.69 per 90).
Thus, it is not surprising that across all competitions last season, he took the majority of his shots from inside the box (80/105), and predominantly on his right foot.
The Frenchman is a high-volume shooter, averaging 3.45 shots per 90, and marginally outperformed his expected goals last season (10.9xG), with 11 converted in the league.

Weaknesses
While Barcola accumulates shooting opportunities, he had a conversion rate of only 15 percent across last season and the World Cup (16 goals from 105 shots).
Against teams that sit in a low block, which Liverpool regularly encounter, his ineffective crossing (20 percent success rate) and wastefulness would need significant improvement.
He lacks consistency and has little experience of seeing out games, having played the full 90 minutes for club and country just nine times since last August.
The demands of the Premier League, and Iraola, will test his fitness and his ability to back up performances every few days, which he has yet to show he is capable of.
Transfer market is inflating Barcola’s price: Would Liverpool pay?

Unsurprisingly, the transfer market has been inflated by deals elsewhere, including Elliot Anderson’s £116 million move to Man City and Sandro Tonali’s £90 million switch to Tottenham.
This has played into the hands of selling clubs, with PSG reportedly seeking a fee of €150 million (£127.8m) for Barcola, which would exceed the record Liverpool set with Alexander Isak last summer (£125m).
As per FotMob, the 23-year-old’s data only sees him valued at £55 million, a more realistic figure in keeping with his experience and output.
An asking price of €150m represents a 79 percent mark-up over his baseline market value, which Liverpool could consider a serious gamble when looking for guaranteed goals (as much as you can) this summer.
If Liverpool could drive down PSG’s price, there is an exciting winger to be signed, but the club would, understandably, be hesitant to pay a high premium for a player who is not yet a guaranteed 20-goal-per-season winger.
