LeBron James’ $6.5m Liverpool investment has grown nearly 20-fold

LeBron James’ 2011 investment in Liverpool FC has surged in value, with recent estimates placing the return at more than 1,800%.

James acquired a 2% stake in the club in 2011 for $6.5 million. Forbes valued Liverpool at around $552 million at the time, but the terms of James’ involvement implied a lower effective valuation of roughly $325 million.

Interest in those figures has resurfaced as Liverpool’s valuation climbs past $6 billion, following reports that a consortium led by British-Indian businessman Amit Bhatia is in talks to acquire a minority stake in the club this summer.

At a $6.2 billion valuation, a 2% stake would be worth approximately $124 million, a gain of more than 1,800% on James’ original outlay according to ESPN.

Sky Sports and the Financial Times have cited a valuation of more than $6 billion in connection with the Bhatia talks, while separate estimates published this week put the figure slightly higher, at $6.2 billion.

The variance is typical of early-stage takeover reporting, where valuations shift depending on the terms under discussion and the source doing the estimating. It does not materially alter the scale of James’ return, which sits comfortably above 1,800% under either figure.

A more significant point for context: the $124 million figure reflects what James’ original 2% stake would be worth today, not his current holding.

In 2021, LeBron James exchanged that direct stake in Liverpool for a 1% stake in Fenway Sports Group, the club’s parent company. His financial exposure is now tied to FSG’s broader valuation, which also includes the Boston Red Sox, rather than to Liverpool in isolation.

The renewed attention on the numbers coincides with Bhatia’s consortium, backed by the Mittal family, entering talks with FSG over the summer. An FSG spokesperson confirmed the approach.

Bhatia stepped down as QPR co-owner on July 21, transferring his shareholding to Ruben Gnanalingam, ending an 18-year association with the Championship club. He built his career in investment banking before founding his own private equity firm, AyBe Capital Advisers.

FSG bought Liverpool for £300 million in 2010. The club sold a previous minority stake to US investment firm Dynasty Equity in 2023, reportedly for between $100 million and $200 million.

Should the Bhatia deal proceed, it would mark FSG’s second major minority sale in three years, and a further indication of how sharply Liverpool’s valuation and the value of stakes acquired early, like James’ has risen since 2011.
