San Antonio Spurs young superstar Victor Wembanyama made a questionable move when he decided to take a five-year, $252 million deal instead of the full amount he could have received.
It saved the Spurs around $50 million because he opted for the 25% max instead of the 30% supermax, according to The Athletic. Regardless, that's what Wembanyama decided to do, and people are very happy about that.
These guys only have a limited time to be paid, and while $252 million is a ridiculous amount of money, I'll never fault somebody for going out and trying to get as much as they can.
Wembanyama isn't that type of guy, however, and the Spurs will hopefully thank him for that one day by bringing him a championship.
Speaking to reporters about that, he understands that in today's NBA, every dollar matters. This is a young man focused on winning championships, which is exactly why he chose this path.
“We have a good team, we had a very good playoff run, and we had a very good regular season. But what’s even better and greater is our potential,” Wembanyama said, per The Athletic. “The reality of today’s NBA is that often, the potential of teams is not fulfilled because of money. I just want to make sure it’s never our case.”
There's definitely something to be said about the potential of the Spurs.
This is a team that has a really good chance to compete for a championship over the next few seasons if things go as planned, as we just saw them win one a few weeks ago. However, this is the NBA we're talking about, and there's a lot of parity. San Antonio will need to keep building, and Wembanyama is allowing them to do just that.
