And in a passionate rant supporting the Magpies, he has backed the Toon hierarchy to rebuild the squad this summer. Newcastle have already lost high-profile stars like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali.
Bruno Guimaraes - not due back in pre-season training until August 3 - is now angling for a move to Arsenal. As it stands, the Gunners are yet to formalise their interest for the midfielder.
‘Sell him’ - Darragh MacAnthony
Defending the Magpies, Posh owner MacAnthony tipped Eddie Howe and sporting director Ross Wilson to re-energise the squad. He told talkSPORT: “I think they should sell him. Take the money, rebuild the squad. Everyone's getting their knickers in a twist over what's happening at Newcastle. You were saying Eddie Howe's frustrated and unhappy.
“Unverified - that's just obviously you (Alex Crook) coming up with that from a contact. Here's the truth and here's the reality. Bournemouth lost their whole back line last year. If you've got great recruitment, as Bournemouth showed, good recruitment solves all problems. I think it's a great chance for Eddie to have a refresh. I think it needs a refresh.
“Ross Wilson is no mug. Look, Newcastle's a really well-run football club. Ross Wilson's a good guy. He was a good hire, I think he'll do well. Of course, he's going to be under pressure, but he needs a few windows.
“Eddie Howe is a top-class manager. For me, if England needed a manager and he was available, you'd try and go after him. This is the perfect time to sit with the players and go, ‘Do you know what? Reset time. We've lost quite a few experienced players. We've lost some big names. We've lost some big egos. Now we go again and we build again’.”
Fresh voices needed?
MacAnthony also suggested a refresh could be exactly what Newcastle need following an underwhelming campaign. He added: “If there's a deal there to be done for an outgoing player, get it done. If you really mean he's not for sale, get him to sign a new deal and keep him.
“If he is for sale, pick up the phone to Arsenal, tell them to behave themselves. Newcastle aren't skint members. They pay well. But if I were them and their fans, take a deep breath, go sign some players. You need better recruitment than last summer.
“It needs to be nailed on. I think for him and the training ground it would be great because he'll have fresh voices - and maybe that's what's needed.”
