The San Antonio Spurs' franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama made headlines this offseason after putting the team's long-term future ahead of his own financial gain while signing his first NBA contract extension. Although several high-profile figures questioned whether he gave up too much money, Wembanyama has no regrets about the decision.
Ahead of being unveiled as the cover athlete for NBA 2K27, Wembanyama explained why he chose not to sign the richest extension available to him. The Spurs star said that the Spurs' long-term championship outlook mattered more than maximizing his own earnings.
“We have a good team, we had a very good playoff run, and we had a very good regular season. But what’s even better and greater is our potential,” Wembanyama said.
“The reality of today’s NBA is that often, the potential of teams is not fulfilled because of money. I just want to make sure it’s never our case.”
Wembanyama qualified for the Derrick Rose Rule, which could have increased his extension to a 30% supermax worth more than $300 million if he achieved certain performance incentives. Instead, he requested that those escalator clauses be removed from the contract.
His decision is expected to save the Spurs roughly $50 million over the duration of the extension, giving the front office significantly more flexibility under the NBA's luxury tax system. That additional cap space could prove invaluable as San Antonio prepares for future contract negotiations with rising young stars.
Wembanyama’s ultimate goal is to bring championships back to San Antonio. By sacrificing part of his own earning potential, the 22-year-old believes he has given the Spurs a better chance to retain their young core and build a roster capable of competing for an NBA title in the years ahead.
